EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH OF AMERICA CHALLENGE ‘10 EVENT TO “Our pre-registration is over 4,725, plus staff,” said Sharon Trucker of EFCA. “We have outreach projects, the backpack project, and the worship band Starfield will be performing.” The “Undo” theme of Challenge ‘10 refers to the belief that “Life that is truly life flows from the soul that has been ‘undone’ by the all-consuming love of Christ,” according to the EFCA. The Challenge five-day conference occurs every two years and is designed for junior and senior high school students throughout the United States, combining speakers, outreach projects, training and recreational activities in one event. Among the special projects during the conference is the GlobalFingerprints & Challenge Red Backpacks for Orphans. GlobalFingerprints is the child sponsorship division of the EFCA TouchGlobal. During the conference, participants will be making red backpacks for orphans in the Congo, a new site in India, and the orphans resulting from the earthquake in Haiti. The backpacks are filled with basic hygiene products and school supplies and become the treasured possession of the recipients. The goal is to construct a backpack for all of the 1,500 orphans the organization hopes to sponsor by July 31. Backpacks will be constructed in the Convention Center’s Grand Ballroom from 11:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 29 through July 2. Starfield, a worship band, will perform on June 29. Church teachings define “free” as a reference to the organizational structure and congregational form of governance of the church. “Evangelical” refers to the church’s faith and theology. EFCA was founded in 1850 as the result of the merger of the Evangelical Free Church of America (of Swedish origin) and the Norwegian-Danish Evangelical Free Church Association. Based in Minneapolis, EFCA today is an association of more than 1,500 churches and church plants in more than 75 countries throughout the world. “Our Grand Ballroom is filled with about 200 sewing machines for the EFCA event attendees to create the red backpacks for a great cause,” said SMG Regional General Manager Craig M. Liston. The Greater Columbus Convention Center, located in downtown Columbus, hosted an estimated 2.5 million visitors in 2009.
