For Immediate Release

Downtown highway construction for weekend of October 26

Another milestone will be reached this weekend, weather permitting, when crews open the new Spring Street Bridge, five days ahead of schedule. By 11 p.m., Friday night, one lane of Spring Street will open to traffic heading west towards downtown. Favorable weather conditions and an aggressive work schedule, which included double shifts and weekends, are the main reasons the bridge opened five days early. When Spring Street closed in April, crews had 180 days maximum to demolish two bridges, build a new roadway bridge, and part of the new tunnel that goes under Spring Street. They also had to have at least one traffic open by October 31. The Spring Street Bridge, is one of 22 new bridges on this $200 million highway project that started last year. This is a signature bridge on the I-71/670 project because of the pedestrian accommodations and many aesthetic treatments. Once complete in 2014, the bridge will have a total of three lanes for vehicular traffic, wider sidewalks, a bike lane on the north side of the street, decorative fencing, planters and arched pier columns visible from I-71.When the bridge opens Friday night, both the driving surface and sidewalk are temporary. Final work on the roadway and sidewalks on each side of the bridge still need to be constructed.
